Raining Cats And Blogs: Earth Day - Get in the spirit of the Day!!

Earth Day - Get in the spirit of the Day!!

Earth Day was started in the spring of 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson(D-WI) . By December, Congress authorized a new federal agency to take on environmental issues ( the US Environmental Protection Agency). The First actually Earth Day celebration was on April 22, 1970 and was attended by nearly 20 million Americans! Earth Day also triggered such national legislation as the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act.

Earth day is a perfect opportunity for us all to step up and start good “Earth Friendly “ habits. Why not spend a few minutes today and do something good for the Earth ( and keep doing it from now on). Maybe Pick up litter, plant a tree, recycle , buy an aluminum water bottle and stop using disposable plastic water bottles, Stop at your local farmers market for you fruits and veggies, buy some pretty re-usable grocery bags and stop using paper or plastic ones, and if you REALLY want to celebrate the day and can afford it then rethink HOW you drive (get an energy efficient car, drive less and walk more, drive slower, etc) Many businesses are getting in the “spirit of the day and you should too!

There are some “perks” for today from some businesses as well:

Starbucks is giving free coffee today if you bring in a travel mug to be filled

Lowes is giving away a million trees nationwide (tomorrow – April 23)

Old Navy will take your old flip flops and recycle them in to new playgrounds

Anthropologie is hosting a craft day for kids (free of course).

The National Park Service is waiving entrance fees this week, so visitors can enjoy all 392 national parks for free through Sunday.

Enjoy Earth Day Everyone...

Earth day is such a cool concept.  I love the way our world is becoming more eco friendly.

We are moving in the right direction.  There is still a lot more to be done.

Everyday should be Earth day. We only have one Earth and should take better care on a daily basis.

We have so much more to accomplish but Earth Day is at least an acknowledgment that we need to be doing something! Good post, Sheila.

I didn't know Parks were free this weekend!  That's a great idea...if only NJ would follow suit!

Toni-  It is hard to believe that we have had an Earth Day for over 40 years!!!  Yet we still need to do a lot of work for the Earth!

Laura - I hope we get a chance to go to at least one this weekend..
