iPhone or whyPhone?
So the iPhone 4 will be available at Verizon soon – February 10, I believe, with pre-sales starting February 03. I’m sure there will be a rush to acquire this new toy…er, I mean phone, and for good reason. But not reason enough, in my opinion, to buy the iPhone over an Android product, like the Droid X.
Probably the two most attractive features on the iPhone 4 are 1) it is a 4G device, which means it will navigate between tasks, surf the web and enhance high speed applications (like gaming) with blazing speed and definition, and 2) it has two cameras -- one on the front and one on the back – which will enable the user to have a video conversation with another person, in real time…like Skype.
There are several drawbacks for me with regard to these two flagship features. First of all, my local Verizon guy told me that we will not likely have 4G service in our area for about two years. The service is only available in larger markets right now, so the folks around here who buy the iPhone now are buying a main feature that they cannot benefit from. The iPhone 4 will automatically revert to the next next best thing, which is 3G…which is what the Droid X has.
Secondly, I am a huge fan of the two camera thing, and the ability to video chat right on your phone, but that is only a great feature if the people you will be talking to have the same phone with the same capabilities. If they don’t, you have yet another key feature that you cannot benefit from.
After that, the contest is over. Comparing the technological savvy and overall offerings of the iPhone 4 with the Droid X is something akin to comparing the first computer you ever had with one you have today. It would be a short conversation with an obvious conclusion. They just aren’t in the same league.
Now don’t think that I am an iPhone hater – I am not. In fact, I have only had my Droid X a few weeks. I had the opportunity to wait on the iPhone 4, and chose not to (this is the very first smart phone I have ever had after all the years I have had phones, so to wait another few weeks would not have killed me!) I based my decision on the data I read about both phones, as well as the Verizon guy’s opinion of both (I have dealt with the same guy for ?? 15?? years, and I trust his knowledge…implicitly) Apple makes a good product, but it does not rival Google innovation. Period.
So with all that the Android phones have to offer, and all that the iPhone does NOT have to offer (in our area), maybe it should be called the whyPhone???
Just a thought…
