Raining Cats And Blogs: iPhone or whyPhone?

iPhone or whyPhone?

iPhone or whyPhone?

So the iPhone 4 will be available at Verizon soon – February 10, I believe, with pre-sales starting February 03. I’m sure there will be a rush to acquire this new toy…er, I mean phone, and for good reason. But not reason enough, in my opinion, to buy the iPhone over an Android product, like the Droid X.

Probably the two most attractive features on the iPhone 4 are 1) it is a 4G device, which means it will navigate between tasks, surf the web and enhance high speed applications (like gaming) with blazing speed and definition, and 2) it has two cameras -- one on the front and one on the back – which will enable the user to have a video conversation with another person, in real time…like Skype.

There are several drawbacks for me with regard to these two flagship features. First of all, my local Verizon guy told me that we will not likely have 4G service in our area for about two years. The service is only available in larger markets right now, so the folks around here who buy the iPhone now are buying a main feature that they cannot benefit from. The iPhone 4 will automatically revert to the next next best thing, which is 3G…which is what the Droid X has.

Secondly, I am a huge fan of the two camera thing, and the ability to video chat right on your phone, but that is only a great feature if the people you will be talking to have the same phone with the same capabilities. If they don’t, you have yet another key feature that you cannot benefit from.

After that, the contest is over. Comparing the technological savvy andiPhone 4 next to Droid X overall offerings of the iPhone 4 with the Droid X is something akin to comparing the first computer you ever had with one you have today. It would be a short conversation with an obvious conclusion. They just aren’t in the same league.

Now don’t think that I am an iPhone hater – I am not. In fact, I have only had my Droid X a few weeks. I had the opportunity to wait on the iPhone 4, and chose not to (this is the very first smart phone I have ever had after all the years I have had phones, so to wait another few weeks would not have killed me!) I based my decision on the data I read about both phones, as well as the Verizon guy’s opinion of both (I have dealt with the same guy for ?? 15?? years, and I trust his knowledge…implicitly) Apple makes a good product, but it does not rival Google innovation. Period.

So with all that the Android phones have to offer, and all that the iPhone does NOT have to offer (in our area), maybe it should be called the whyPhone???

Just a thought…

Sheila, I believe my contract comes up for an upgrade this month sometime. I still use the Palm Centro & love the infra-red port for use on my lock boxes, but I don't have anything near quick enough for Internet access.  I am going to check out the Galaxy Fascinate...

I LOVE my I Phone 4.  My friend has the Droid and I did not like it.  I have enjoyed every feature of my I phone.

Thanks for the analysis! You know more than many of the people who work in these stores. I hate (maybe that is too strong a word, but you get the idea) AT&T, so the Verizon offering is very exciting.

"The whyphone" - Ouch!!  I saw an agent today answered a question on Trulia by saying, "Do you want an agent who always has his iPhone at his side", like people care what kind of phone we carry. This was a good writeup, you're lucky to have a tech guy all that time that you trust.

Hi Patricia...I'm glad you liked the article! Thanks for stopping by!  : )

Hi Don...I used to carry a Palm myself, and, like you, I loved the infrared port for opening ELBs. I am not familiar with the Galaxy Fascinate, however. Good luck deciding!

Hi Sarah...I'm glad you like your iPhone; it is a good product.

Hey Jason...Around here, Verizon is the strongest provider, but I know that is not the case in all markets. AT&T enjoys the same reputation here as you have described there...HaHa!

Hey Joetta...That's funny about the Trulia post...isn't it funny how silly some people are with what they think really matters? HA! Glad you liked the article.  : )

Sheila, I weighed the options and chose the Droid X. So far so good but so far I like it.
