Raining Cats And Blogs: Enough About Ted Williams Already!

Enough About Ted Williams Already!

Enough About Ted Williams Already!

I know way more than I want to know about Ted Williams. Every time I look up, it seems, there he is...on TV or in the newspaper or online. The media has just gone rabid over this man’s life. Even Dr. Phil has gotten in on the circus and had several shows devoted exclusively to Ted Williams.

Here’s the breakdown as I see it: The man is a heroin addict who does not want help. (I just read today that he left the rehab facility Dr. Phil sent him to after only two weeks – you know --Origins…the one that costs a million dollars a second to be at?) He has said that he intends to be with his girlfriend, who is also a heroin addict. And SHE has said that she is perfectly willing to live on the street and all that goes with that, just to be with Ted.

Why would you take a homeless heroin addict off the street and start paying them lots of money in an element they are completely unaccustomed to? It is unfair and ridiculous, not to mention manipulative and inhumane.

Nobody cares about Ted Williams, except maybe his family. So it bothers me that he is being puppeted around on different shows and given all this attention and “concern,” when not a single one of those people care about him. It is all for ratings and money.

Dr. Phil would take offense at my accusation that nobody cares, but I stand by my statement. Just because he put this guy in a fancy rehab facility doesn’t mean that he cares. This is a hard core addict who shows ABSOLUTELY NO DESIRE WHATSOEVER TO CHANGE. Period. Let’s call a spade a spade. So all this BS pseudo-counseling on Dr. Phil is NOT finding a target and it isn’t going to…therefore, it is not unreasonable to say that Dr. Phil doesn’t care either because he is trying to push a square through a circle, and any idiot can see that it’s not going to work. Dr. Phil practically strongarmed him into going to rehab, and a forced addict WILL NOT SUCCEED IN ANY PROGRAM.

I wish Ted would latch on in rehab and do the work. It would probably save his life. But he doesn’t want to – not at this time – so maybe the best thing we can do with Ted Williams is back off the cameras, find another story-of- the-minute to obsess over, and leave him alone. It is an outrage to be tossing this man around, giving him false expectations and profiting from it.

There are countless heroin addicts out there, so why did we choose this one to make our pet project? His voice??? Who cares about his voice? Maybe we should just wish him well and send him on his way. That’s what he wants. And, if sometime in the future he feels he can beat his demons, he’ll be back...on his own terms.

In the meantime, even heroin addicts have their dignity…and trying to "save" him at this time is setting him up for failure.

And there is no dignity in that.

The Culture - The News Media - The World - is always trying to get us to focus our attention on somebody or another.  It's either the latest Hollywood Celeb and their new "Love Child", or some loser like this Ted Williams guy (what an insult to the "Real" Ted Williams, who is one of the Baseball Greats).

I join you in saying "Enough Already!"

Hello Sheila:

I heard this story when it first broke several weeks ago, but haven't heard/seen much since (I don't watch daytime TV).  Your take on Dr Phil is pretty accurate and giving help to an addict that won't help themselves is a waste and damaging to the addict.

Self destruction sells. Ted Williams is well down the path of self destruction. He's been given a tremendous chance to change his life, but he is unable. What a delicious story for many media types. It reminds me of Robert Duvall's words to Robert Redford in "The Natural":

"Kid, whether your a hero or a goat tomorrow, you're gonna make me a great story."

At least they were trying to put on something good instead of the leading blood and guts.  We need more good news stories.

Too bad he fell out.
