Gone Fishing

Gone Fishing

Zebco LogoIt’s funny to think how many people in these United States have never once in their lives held a fishing pole. And if they have never held a pole, it stands to reason that they have never baited a hook…or felt a live fish in their hands with a hook still in its mouth…And I bet lots of people have never eaten a fresh caught fish – not in a restaurant…I mean caught with a pole in the last few hours.

Growing up in the south, many kids – girls and boys alike – are exposed to the sport of fishing, if you want to call it a sport. Many are taught early on how to thread a worm on a hook, and what to feel and watch for to know Zebco Rod and Reelwhen you have a fish on the line. Some people use crickets instead of worms, and others may use bread or corn…it’s all good as long as the fish will go for it.

Most folks use a rod and reel combination so they can cast their line out a ways from the boat or the shore. It’s easy to learn how to cast, and after a few practice trys, you can be casting like a Cane Polepro. And for those less adventurous, there is the cane pole – a long one-piece, natural bamboo pole with no bells or whistles. There is a line attached to the end of the pole, and the line is long enough for you to swing out the hook and that’s it. When you get a bite, you simply lift the pole and the hook and whatever’s on it comes up out of the water. Easy.

More advanced fishermen/women get all crazy with different kinds of rods and reels, and all types of artificial lures and whatnot, but the fish doesn’t know or care how many toys you have…they just want to eat something that looks appealing. And while the “real” fishermen/women spend all that money on equipment and scented artificial bait, the rest of us can take pleasure in knowing that, when the fish are biting, they would just as soon bite a plain old common worm as they would a fancy artificial lure.

Happy Fishing!
